What sort of comments are allowed in ~/.gradle/gradle.properties files

It seems that if I use:

# . . .

as a comment I get a exception and stack trace, and if I use:

// . . .

I get // entries listed in the properties when running gradle -r

The implication is that comments are not expected in
~/.gradle/gradle.properties which is clearly wrong.

See the javadoc of java.util.Properties.load for what is considered a comment.
